雲肌麻紙（くもはだまし）は、紙の表面に雲のような模様の浮かぶ、麻と楮を主な原料にした手漉きの越前和紙。書かれている歌は若山牧水が大学4年の時に旅の途中に詠んだもの。静かに対峙していると、牧水が諸国を巡りながら鳴らした心の鉦のチリンという音が聞こえるようだ。青春の熱が蘇る。直径50センチのパネル装。

PURE Review
"I am ringing my heart bell again and again like a pilgrim, and longing for the way ahead."
The Waka poem which is written in the work was composed by WAKAYAMA Bokusui when he was an undergraduate in 1907. He loved travelling, and it was in the middle of his journey around the countrysides. If you faced the artwork quietly, you might be able to hear as if the small sound of the bell ringing. The passion of your adolescence would be recalled.
Kumo-hada Ma-shi (雲肌麻紙) is a handmade Echizen Japanese paper made mainly of hemp and hybrid mulberry that has a cloud-like texture on the surface of the paper. 19.7 inches in diameter, mounted on wooden panel.

The Calligrapher's Words
Characters have the power to awake people's minds and to light a fire in people's hearts. For me, both characters and calligraphy are expressions of the heartbeat of our life that arouses the joy of alive. Therefore, I, as the calligrapher, ask myself. My willingness to independence and absoluteness of ideas is required.
I named my calligraphy class after Zeami's words, “Don't forget your original intention.” Zeami continues to say, “Don't forget your original intention every time" and "Don't forget your original intention at your old age.” "Original intention" means an Innocent, fresh, and vibrant heart. I use this spirit on the basis when I express the power of characters.

We are pleased to present the "Power of Characters" series, calligraphy works of OGAWA Izan. OGAWA is an artist who has been active as a calligrapher for about 50 years since the 1970s, and now he is expanding his expression into contemporary art.
This series shows the slogan of PURE SHODO, "Calligraphy to live one's own way" itself. The tradition of calligraphy, which was introduced from China to Japan, developed independently in Japan, and cultivated over many years, leads to the daily lives of today's calligraphers, and expands into our future.
